LITTORAL SOCIETY SPEARHEADS BRIDGETON-WIDE LITTER CLEAN-UP APRIL 29TH

Like an attacking army, the Littoral Society of Cumberland County has divided the City of Bridgeton up into grids for their operations. In this case, it’s a war on litter and the weapons will be gloves, bags, pickers and rakes. What they need most are more volunteers.

Beginning at 8:00am on Saturday, April 29th, groups of volunteers will be fanning out into the streets, parks, and back-alleys of the City to carry out a community-wide litter clean-up as part of a “spring cleaning” to start the warm weather months off right in Bridgeton.

“After a long winter, you would be surprised at the amount of loose litter and trash that builds up. Not only is it a blighting influence, but it also impacts our natural resources and it’s bad for the community” said Littoral Society Conservation Coordinator Meredith Brown.

With teams in City Park and in a host of neighborhoods throughout the community, Bridgeton Mayor Albert Kelly thinks the timing could not be better as administration officials are planning their own anti-litter efforts for the spring and beyond.

“The Littoral Society has been a great partner to Bridgeton and when they approached us about the clean-up effort, we were delighted as we are planning our own anti-litter operations to improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods” Kelly said.

The anti-litter efforts Kelly is referring to include the use of litter marshals, special trash containers in key spots around the city, educational efforts in the schools, stepped up enforcement by code officers, maybe some Class I officers, and police, as well as targeted clean-up efforts in the months ahead.

“Unlike some other projects, litter is one of those things that you’re always contending with. Enforcement is one part of it, but I think education is critical because if people understand the cost to our environment- their environment- I think most people want to do the right thing” said Kelly.

The Littoral Society needs volunteers for 4/29. The clean-up will run from 8:00am to 12 Noon and the Littoral Society will be providing refreshments and lunch afterwards for volunteers. Anyone interested in volunteering even for part of the morning is asked to contact the Littoral Society at (856) 825-2174 or by visiting www.sjwatersavers.org
