STEAMWORKS OFFERS FREE WORKSHOPS- MARCH 18TH
& 19TH MAKER DAYS
Since the October 2015
launch of Steamworks, South Jersey’s first tech makerspace, facility director
Merritt Gant has been pleasantly surprised by the diverse groups of people
coming through the doors.
While Steamworks has its
share of “techies”, musicians, and students on any given day, there’s also a
growing number of retired folks working on projects or seeking to learn some of
the new skills and technologies that is part and parcel of what the
do-it-yourself ethos is all about.
That’s why Steamworks,
Cumberland County College’s Bridgeton NJ satellite campus, will be pulling out
all the stops for a “Makers Day weekend” which will take place over 2 days on
March 18th and 19th at the 46 E. Commerce Street facility in downtown.
“We’ve been seeing a lot
of seniors and retired folks coming down; many are learning how to use a 3-D
printer, while others are making things using our laser etching, it’s great to
see” said Gant.
In addition to the
technology, Steamworks is also seeing an increasing number of musicians and
bands in the region come through to use their digital recording studio; some
recording their first demo, while others are working on a second or third
album.
“Believe it or not, the
recording studio was something of a need in this part of South Jersey and is
proving to be quite popular. Along with the mini-classes, 3-D printing, laser
cutting, Arduino, and robotics, there’s a lot happening” said Gant
The goal behind “Maker
Days” is to provide an opportunity for anyone who may be curious- to see what
the technology is all about and how it works. Along with Steamworks Director
Merritt Gant, tech-saavy volunteers will be doing workshops and hands-on
demonstrations allowing participants to make gifts and other items as part of
Maker Days.
“This is a great way for
people to tap into their creative side and find out what’s happening with some
of the new technology; I encourage everyone to stop by for any one of the
sessions, it’s all informal and relaxed, but it will be informative” said Bridgeton
Mayor Albert Kelly
