BHS YOUTH TEAM UP FOR THE ANNUAL “DASH FOR TRASH” MARCH 19TH IN CITY PARK

They come under several banners; the Interact Club, Youth on Main Street, the African American Club, Bridgeton Rotary and if you happen to see them in City Park this Saturday, March 19th, they will no doubt be part of the “Dash for Trash” taking place in Bridgeton City Park.

Sponsored by the Cumberland County Improvement Authority (CCIA), the “Dash for Trash” is part of a program involving a number of Bridgeton High School youth clubs geared up to remove trash and litter in every nook and cranny of City Park between 8:30am and 11:00am.

Led by William Waterman, School to Career Counselor at Bridgeton High School and Bruce Riley from Ultra Clean Technologies Corp,  the clean-up is the latest in a series of  efforts undertaken by area youth and other stakeholders throughout the year to help maintain and improve the park by removing litter, trash, and graffiti.

“We have some very committed youth here in Bridgeton, over the course of the year, including Earth Day, they show up and do what they can to keep the park in good shape- everything from removing trash from the watershed to removing graffiti, they take it seriously” said Waterman.

For Bridgeton Mayor Albert Kelly, having a contingent of young people invested in the park is as much about the future as the present.

“The City Park belongs to our young people-the next generation- as much as it belongs to us adults. While they play in the park and enjoy it now, they will inherit this park and their children will play here as they do now. Seeing them invested and knowing that it matters to them makes all the difference” said Kelly.

Groups participating in the Dash for Trash will be assembling at the front of Bridgeton High School at 8:30am and will then spread out through the park for their clean-up efforts, which will be wrapping up around 11:00am. Groups will welcome any extra hands for those interested in participating.

“Sometimes you only hear negative things about our young people- only those things that make the headlines; but we have some remarkable young men and woman in our community and if you come out Saturday, you will see them in action” said Kelly.
