BRIDGETON LAUNCHES “URBANSCAPE 2014” GARDEN CONTEST FOR BEST IN CITY

Bridgeton Mayor Albert Kelly is looking for the best flower displays and gardens he can find in the city and he’s asking for nominees. It comes courtesy of “Urbanscape 2014” an informal city-wide garden contest to encourage residents to spruce up their front yards with a seasonal flare and to recognize those who already have.

“We have beautiful architecture in our city, but just as important is “curb-appeal”. Everything from flower displays to gardens in front yards can add to that appeal. A fun city-wide contest is a way to encourage residents to think about beautifying front yards with flowers or plantings-all in the spirit of helping our community look its best”, said Kelly.

The rules, similar to Millville’s successful contest, are basic; decorated areas must be a front yard, the focus will be on flowers or decorative plantings and the area must be visible from a passing car on the street.

“Millville has a great contest and it really helps in making their community shine; I think a Bridgeton contest will have the same impact for us so I wanted start a similar contest in Bridgeton and provide prizes for the top 3 nominees” Kelly said.

Residents offering nominations for the contest should call the Office of the Mayor at (856) 455-3230 Ext 200 and provide the street address of the display being nominated and the name of the person responsible for the display if known. Nominations can be made beginning August 1st with winners being selected the week of September 15th.

“Beyond new flower displays we hope to see for this contest, there are residents who have terrific flower displays every single year that go unrecognized. So part of Urbanscape 2014 is also acknowledging our “regulars”, people who invest in and take pride in their yards “just because” said Kelly.

While prizes will be awarded to the top 3 displays, the exact nature of those prizes will remain a mystery according to Kelly, who is working with a local sponsor to provide a match to his own donation for the contest.

“I hope to get a lot of nominations for Urbanscape 2014, but mostly I look forward to seeing some beautiful displays and honoring the residents who make it happen” Kelly said.
