The Bridgeton Historic District Commission is in need of members. If you have an interest in local history, an interest in the craftsmanship or architecture that comes with older historic buildings and a desire to see these preserved, then Bridgeton’s Historic District Commission might be the thing for you. Known as the “BHDC”, the Commission offers citizens an opportunity to make a difference doing important work for the entire community.

WHO:
The commission is in need of members and the City of Bridgeton seeks 1 Class-A member with professional experience in architecture, building design, or architectural history; 1 Class- C member who need not have professional experience but a willingness to serve and learn, and 2 Class-C “Alternates”.

WHEN:
One evening a month (fourth Monday of each month excluding holidays) the commission meets to review applications based on the Historic District Guidelines.

WHY:
Serving on the Bridgeton Historic District Commission is on a volunteer basis and members take great satisfaction in helping to shape the community while meeting and working with new colleagues and friends.

                                  About Bridgeton’s Historic District

Listed on both the State and National Register of Historic Places in 1982, Bridgeton has New Jersey’s largest historic district with over 2,000 structures, with some dating back to the 1700’s. To help manage and maintain the district and its inventory of buildings, Bridgeton established its local historic commission to ensure that these assets are preserved.

“Bridgeton’s historic district is more than the sum of its buildings; it’s a community asset with diverse features representing many architectural styles. In the same way, our local commission needs to be just as diverse in the skills and experiences it brings to the work of historic preservation”
-Albert B. Kelly, Mayor -
